Maya Nukumizu
Born in Kyoto, Japan. Relocated to Tokyo in 2012, where she continues to live and work.
She completed her MFA in Fine Arts at Kyoto University of the Arts (formerly Kyoto University of Art and Design) and studied under Keiichi Tanaami during her university years.
Drawing from a deep-rooted influence of manga culture since childhood, Nukumizu depicts an infinite range of “protagonists” with an affirmative and celebratory perspective.
Her work reflects the information-saturated nature of contemporary society through a pop, maximalist aesthetic, employing manga-inspired visual language to create energetic and densely layered worlds.
In addition to presenting her work both in Japan and internationally, she has participated in art fairs and produced CD jacket artwork for artists such as Macaroni Empitsu and Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku.
Recent solo exhibitions include “STRANGE STRANGERS” (OIL by Bijutsutecho Gallery, Tokyo, 2025).
