Collection: Natsumi Noda/Imustan
We are pleased to introduce the work of artist Natsumi Noda through her two brands: “Natsumi Noda” and “Imustan.”
Under the Natsumi Noda brand, she creates ceramic works inspired by botanical motifs. These vessels are designed as gentle communication tools — pieces that invite conversation and connection in everyday life.
Her other project, Imustan, is a ceramic brand based on the theme of “something that might possibly exist, slightly mysterious.” Through playful and humorous motifs, the works bring a subtle sense of joy to the familiar routines of daily life.
Now, a new item has joined the collection — tenugui.
This tenugui series is a special project that translates the worlds of these two ceramic brands into textile form.
It captures the quiet humor of Imustan alongside the vitality and warmth found in the botanical motifs of the Natsumi Noda brand.
The interview article will be published in three parts.
For the first time, I would like to ask how you started making ceramic works and how the two lines "Natsumi Noda" and "Imustan" were born.
” I enjoy the dining experience very much,
This is common with the "Shitamachi (traditional downtown area) culture" that I was born and raised in,
I think the communication with people that comes from that is the starting point of my production. "
*"Shitamachi culture" represents Japan's traditional urban life, prevalent in Tokyo's older, working-class neighborhoods. It's like exploring an untouched corner of an old city, filled with narrow lanes, local vendors, modest eateries, and a strong sense of community. Festivals keep ancient traditions alive, and the affordable street food like sushi and soba noodles adds to its charm. Shitamachi is a living time capsule, offering a nostalgic glimpse into Japan's past amidst its modern cities.
Please take a look at the background of Ms. Noda's production.
