The 14 stories included in this new edition of Combats involve a group of masked and costumed people infiltrating a location, confronting another masked and costumed group, and then escaping. It follows a unique narrative pattern that can be called a modus operandi. Move from point A to point B, dealing as much damage as possible and defeating as many enemies as possible. At the top of the enemy's fortress, in the deepest, most guarded area, there is a "boss" to neutralize. .... From this arcade game scenario, Yuichi Yokoyama creates endless combinations of shapes, chains of action, and original situations and images.
His characters use a full range of weapons in a hostile, geometric setting filled with aggressive onomatopoeia. Swords, plates, knives, faucets, cannons, potted flowers, rockets, books, etc. are used indiscriminately, and the action is violently carried out without realism or morality, with no discernible motive, and without emotion. . These showdowns sometimes seem like commando missions, punitive expeditions, or mafia feuds, but like the comics they're depicted in, they seem to come out of nowhere and then quickly return to nowhere.
Combats will be republished in a larger format to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the founding of Edition Matière and the 20th anniversary of Yuichi Yokoyama's publishing career. Five previously unpublished works, with a binding suitable for panoramic reading on double-page spreads, and a richly illustrated introduction that looks back in particular on the author's early career and recreates the first interview conducted by Mr. Yokoyama. has been added.
