In this catalogue-cum-companion-volume to a solo show at the Aomori Museum of Art, works and exhibition views organized around five themes—“house/home,” “space-time in layers,” “travel,” “no war,” and “Rock Café ‘33 1/3’ and a small community”—elucidate the essential “core” leading back to the very origins of Yoshitomo Nara’s sensibilities. The book also features a detailed chronology as well as essays by Aomori Museum of Art curator Shigemi Takahashi, philosophy scholar Masato Goda, and music critic Josh Kun.

Yoshitomo Nara was born in 1959 in the city of Hirosaki in Aomori Prefecture and received an MFA from the Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music in 1987. In 1988 he moved to Germany, where he attended the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and based himself for a time in Köln before returning to Japan in 2000. Since the late 1990s his works have been shown widely throughout Japan, Asia, Europe, and North America.
